BYD has announced that it has built 6,682 flash-charging stations across 321 cities in China. The milestone was revealed during the presentation of the new Great Tang (Da Tang) SUV. These charging stations are capable of replenishing a battery from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes, delivering up to 1,500 kW of DC charging power through a single connector.
The company’s flash-charging technology was first unveiled on March 5, 2026. At the time, BYD announced an ambitious nationwide infrastructure project called “Flash Charging China” and set a goal of constructing 20,000 ultra-fast charging stations across the country by the end of the year, including 2,000 locations along major highways.
However, the pace of construction has not been consistent. By April 1, BYD had already installed its 5,000th charging station, covering 297 cities – an impressive achievement completed within just 27 days. Growth then slowed considerably. By May 5, the network had expanded to 5,715 stations following the opening of a new site in Inner Mongolia, while the total reached 5,979 stations by May 17. Over the past month, the company added only 703 new charging points.
As of June 17, BYD had completed just 33.4% of its stated annual target. To reach its goal of 20,000 stations by year-end, the company would need to build an additional 13,318 charging sites during the second half of the year – a challenging task at the current rate of deployment.
