BMW is considering a possibility that until recently looked unusual for a brand with a reputation for “driver’s cars.” We are talking about a ladder-type frame — a structure that is usually associated with utilitarian off-road vehicles and pickups rather than premium crossovers.
The information appeared thanks to a patent filing, where a new interpretation of frame architecture is described. It is important to understand: this is not a return to old solutions. It is rather an attempt to redefine the principle itself – to make the construction lighter, stiffer and better adapted to modern requirements.
A classic frame structure provides several major advantages. It withstands heavy loads, offers better durability and is suitable for harsh conditions. This is exactly why it is used in off-road vehicles. However, it also has some downsides – weight, handling and on-road behavior.
