Volkswagen is reportedly preparing to rename its electric SUV, the ID.4, which could enter the market under the new name ID. Tiguan as part of an upcoming restyling.
The move is driven by the brand’s intention to increase consumer awareness and strengthen the connection between its electric lineup and the well-known gasoline-powered Tiguan, one of Volkswagen’s longest-running and most recognizable models. By linking the EV to an established nameplate, VW aims to make the transition to electric mobility more familiar for buyers.
The new designation is expected to be introduced alongside a comprehensive refresh of the model. Spy photos circulating online suggest a redesigned exterior with styling elements closer to the internal-combustion Tiguan, particularly in the front-end design and overall proportions, aligning the EV more closely with Volkswagen’s current design language.
Despite the name change, the model is expected to retain the MEB electric platform, while the rebranding serves primarily as a marketing strategy to reinforce Volkswagen’s EV positioning and improve brand cohesion across its lineup.
The launch of the refreshed generation is anticipated in 2026, with the European market expected to receive it first, followed by other key regions. Production is reportedly planned to continue until 2031, indicating Volkswagen’s long-term commitment to the model.
Renaming the ID.4 as ID. Tiguan also signals Volkswagen’s focus on brand recognition and continuity, linking the future of electric vehicles with familiar and trusted model names. The strategy is intended to lower psychological barriers for buyers by associating new electric technology with Volkswagen’s established heritage.
