The updated Lynk & Co 02 electric fastback crossover will become the first Geely model to feature the company’s new integrated 16-in-1 electric drive system, according to brand representatives. The vehicle is a refreshed version of the Lynk & Co Z20, which will be marketed in China as the Lynk & Co 20. The new drive unit was unveiled on July 16 and is claimed to be the most efficient in the industry, with a peak efficiency rating of 93.8%.
During the launch presentation, Geely engineers revealed that the first vehicle to receive the new powertrain was the Geely Galaxy TT sports sedan, which has not yet entered the Chinese market. However, on July 17, Lynk & Co announced that the updated 02 would become the first mass-production model available to customers with the new drive system.
Nicknamed Thunder, the new electric drive integrates 12 hardware components into a single unit, including the electric motor, motor controller, gearbox, DC-DC converter, onboard charger, power distribution unit, high- and low-voltage battery management systems, vehicle control unit, thermal management system, pre-charge module, and power-domain gateway. The hardware is complemented by four software modules responsible for energy management, charging control, vehicle dynamics control, and system health monitoring.
According to Geely, the new architecture reduces high-voltage wiring length by 30%. Shorter wiring lowers electrical resistance and energy losses, improving overall efficiency. The Thunder unit is also less than 325 mm tall, freeing up space for future technologies such as steer-by-wire systems while increasing both cargo and front trunk capacity.
System response time has reportedly been reduced from 40 milliseconds to just 2 milliseconds. Geely also highlights improved energy efficiency: the Galaxy TT sedan previously achieved an energy consumption figure of 8.2 kWh per 100 km, setting a Guinness World Record. Integrating multiple components into a single module has additionally reduced the total parts count by more than 180, helping lower manufacturing costs.
