Škoda’s decision to leave the Chinese market is one of the most illustrative events in the automotive industry in recent years. The company, which once saw the Chinese market as a key direction for development, was unable to adapt to rapid changes in the market.
The main reason for leaving was the drastic shift of the market toward EVs and digital technologies. Traditional ICE vehicles are gradually losing their positions, while local manufacturers are actively increasing their market share thanks to more affordable and technologically advanced solutions.
Sales statistics show the scale of the problem. In the period from 2016 to 2018, Škoda sold around 300,000 units annually, but by 2025 sales had decreased to 15,000 units. This decline removed the economic rationale for the brand’s presence.
Additional pressure came from Chinese competitors such as BYD and Geely, which not only offer more affordable prices but also implement new technologies faster. As a result, foreign manufacturers found themselves in a situation where their traditional strengths stopped working.
